We are excited to welcome you to a creative and inspiring Block Printing Workshop! In this workshop, we will explore the fascinating art of traditional block printing – a ancient technique where patterns are printed onto fabric using carved wooden blocks. These wooden blocks, usually made of teak or rosewood, are carved by hand without the use of machines. Skilled artisans use a variety of small chisels, drills, and hammers to create unique patterns.
While block printing originally came from China, it spread to other parts of the world, such as India, where it developed its own cultural identity.
Under the guidance of Kamalakshi Saikia, a Singapore-based artist of Indian origin, you will learn step by step how to:
•Prepare fabric for printing
•Mix printing inks
•Create patterns on fabric using various engraved blocks
•Treat the fabric to set the colors
About the Artist:
Kamalakshi Saikia works from her studio in Singapore, creating designs on fabric, paper, canvas, and other materials. She experiments with various surface design techniques – dyeing, stamping, printing, stenciling, stitching, and embellishing, among others. Her passion lies in pushing the boundaries of what is possible – and she is excited to share that passion with us.
No prior experience is required – everyone is welcome to join.
Aprons will be provided to protect your clothing from spills and ink stains.
