  We are excited to welcome you to a creative and inspiring Block Printing Workshop! In this workshop, we will explore the fascinating art of traditional block printing – a ancient technique where patterns are printed onto fabric using carved wooden blocks. These wooden blocks, usually made of teak or rosewood, are carved by hand without the use of machines. Skilled artisans use a variety of small chisels, drills, and hammers to create unique patterns.
  

  While block printing originally came from China, it spread to other parts of the world, such as India, where it developed its own cultural identity.

  Under the guidance of Kamalakshi Saikia, a Singapore-based artist of Indian origin, you will learn step by step how to:

  •Prepare fabric for printing

  •Mix printing inks

  •Create patterns on fabric using various engraved blocks

  •Treat the fabric to set the colors

  About the Artist:

  Kamalakshi Saikia works from her studio in Singapore, creating designs on fabric, paper, canvas, and other materials. She experiments with various surface design techniques – dyeing, stamping, printing, stenciling, stitching, and embellishing, among others. Her passion lies in pushing the boundaries of what is possible – and she is excited to share that passion with us.

  No prior experience is required – everyone is welcome to join.

  Aprons will be provided to protect your clothing from spills and ink stains.

• Vesak Day Temples Tour

  Vesak is considered the holiest day observed by Buddhists all over the world. Informally known as "Buddha's Birthday", it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha.

  On this tour with our guide Charlotte, we will visit 3 temples, each representing a different tradition of Buddhism, as they prepare to celebrate the most important day in the Buddhist calendar.

  The first temple, Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, popularly known as Bright Hill Temple, is the largest monastery in Singapore and one of the largest in South East Asia. Founded in 1921, this extensive monastery and temple which comprises of 11 sections, are adorned with intricate architectural designs, elaborate Chinese decorations, breath-taking statues of Buddha and Bodhisattva, gardens and shrines.

  Next stop is the Burmese Buddhist Temple, built in the traditional Myanmar style and houses the largest pure white marble statue of the Buddha outside of Myanmar. Hear the story of how one man’s determination to fulfill the mission of introducing the Theravada school of Buddhism in Singapore, led to the building of this temple.

  Our final stop is a Tibetan Buddhist Temple where many of their devotees are young Singaporeans. The small but colourful temple is very involved in charity work, including providing free Traditional Chinese Medicine consulting service, acupuncture and medicine for the needy.

  Meeting point: At the front of Newton Hawker Centre, 9.00am

  • Foot ware to be easily slipped on/off as we need to remove them at the entrances to the temples
  • Bring a bottle of water 
  • Our tour has several stops that can be reached via transportation. A bus is available and transport charges, which have to be paid directly to the bus driver on the day of the tour, apply (depending on the number of participants).

  Entdeckungsreise nach Johor Bahru – Ein Kultur Abenteuer vor Singapurs Haustür!
  

  Seid ihr bereit, die nächste, spannende Entdeckungstour durch Singapurs quirlige Nachbarstadt zu erleben? Mit der German Association und unseren erfahrenen deutschsprachigen Guides Chaqa und Fatimah wird dieser Tagesausflug nach Johor Bahru (JB) zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis! Wir zeigen euch JB und Umgebung, wie ihr es noch nie gesehen habt.
  

  Unsere Reise beginnt am Woodlands Causeway und führt euch durch das historische Herz von Johor Bahru. In Old Town erkundet ihr das lebendige Little India und schlendert durch die traditionsreiche Tan Hi Ok Nee Street. Hier erwartet euch nicht nur das berühmte Chinese Heritage Centre, sondern auch Malaysias bester und legendärer Banana Cake – ein Muss für jeden JB-Besucher!

  Ein besonderes Highlight ist der atemberaubende Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple, der einzige Crystal Hindu Tempel in Johor. Anschließend geht es in die Premium Outlet Mall, die mit seinem amerikanischen Flair zum entspannten Shopping oder, für die Nicht-Shopper, zum Kaffeetrinken und Verweilen einlädt. Dort ist auch genügend Zeit zum Mittagessen in einem der zahlreichen Restaurants oder Foodcourts.

  Gut gestärkt geht es dann weiter zur mysteriösen "Forest City" – einem der faszinierendsten und umstrittensten Stadtentwicklungsprojekte Malaysias. Wir gehen mitten rein in die "Ghost City" und schauen uns alles genau vor Ort an. Von dort aus geht es über den Grenzübergang "Tuas Checkpoint" zurück nach Singapur, wo die Tagestour an der "Tuas Link" MRT Station (EW33) endet.
  

  Ein weiteres Highlight? Ihr teilt eure Erlebnisse des Tages mit gleichgesinnten Entdeckerinnen und Entdeckern der Reise! Eine perfekte Gelegenheit also, mit Hilfe der GA-Community neue Freundschaften zu knüpfen und euer Netzwerk zu erweitern.
